Officer Responds to A Call in Tiny Village … Tragedy Strikes

Avon, Illinois – In small villages like Avon, where everyone knows each other, the sense of community is strong. And it is often the local police officers who play a pivotal role in maintaining that harmony. One such officer was Deputy Troy Chisholm, a devoted family man, a skilled paramedic, and a respected member of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Department. But on that fateful afternoon of June 25th, 2019, his life was tragically cut short, leaving behind a community forever changed.

The incident began like any other day on duty for Deputy Chisholm. Responding to a call about a disturbance and battery at a property in Avon, he could never have anticipated the horrors that awaited him. The suspect, Nathan Woodring, a 42-year-old man with a history of criminal activities, including burglary and mob-related charges, had become a threat to the safety of others.

Arriving at the scene, Deputy Chisholm knew that backup was only minutes away. But little did he know that those four minutes would bring about a devastating turn of events. Woodring, armed and dangerous, opened fire on the unsuspecting officer, fatally striking him. Deputy Chisholm’s bravery and dedication could not protect him from this senseless act of violence.

Tragically, Deputy Chisholm succumbed to his injuries almost instantly, leaving behind a grieving community and a shattered family. As news of his passing spread, the shock and sorrow reverberated throughout Avon. Sheriff Jeff Standard expressed the pain felt by the entire Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, calling it an “unexpected and intense grief.” To them, Deputy Chisholm was not just a colleague but a brother, a friend, and a confidant.

The impact of Deputy Chisholm’s loss extended beyond the law enforcement community. His eldest daughter, Kylie, who had been inspired by her father’s selfless work, pursued her own career as a paramedic. Speaking with heartfelt reverence, she shared, “Everything I have accomplished, everything I have yet to accomplish, has always been for him. He always knew how strong I was, even when I didn’t know it myself.”

The loss of Deputy Chisholm was a painful reminder of the risks officers face every day. In the United States alone, 150 officers lost their lives in the line of duty in 2018. Although this number was slightly lower than the average, it is still an alarmingly high figure. June of 2019, in particular, marked a deadly period, with five officers intentionally gunned down within just eight days.

Deputy Troy Chisholm’s tragic sacrifice serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the dangers faced by law enforcement officers worldwide. While we honor his memory and mourn his loss, we must also recognize and appreciate the countless officers who risk their lives daily to keep our communities safe. Today, we stand in solidarity with the Chisholm family and the brave men and women who continue to serve and protect.
